The Undoing Racism Workshop has been developed and will be presented by the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond. Through dialogue, reflection, role-playing, strategic planning and presentations, this workshop challenges participants to analyze power structures and privilege that hinder social equity and prepares them to be effective managers and organizers for justice.
The trainers for this workshop will be Berwick “Mahdi” Davenport, Sylvia Ledesma, and David Billings. Sylvia Ledesma grew up in Austin and was an original founder of PODER. She now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mahdi Davenport is the founder of Relationship Fitness Center, LLC, in Houston and author of four books, including It’s Time the Race is Over. David Billings has been an anti-racist trainer and organizer with the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond since 1983. He is an ordained United Methodist minister and an historian with a special interest in the history of race and racism.
Our trainings are strategically balanced by race, gender and age to achieve the workshop goals. We also make a sincere effort to meet participant requirements, including diet, access and childcare. We will provide dinner on Wednesday evening, breakfast, lunch, and snacks on Thursday and Friday. Dress comfortably. Bring a pen and paper for notes.
Trainings are limited to 40 participants. If your circumstances change so that you cannot join us, let us know as soon as possible so that we can invite participants on the waiting list.
